Kulitvators "Holly Jolly Holiday" Luncheon - Dec.2009

On December 10th the Kankakee Kultivators had their annual Christmas luncheon at The Kankakee Country Club. Members brought Christmas gifts for children which were given to the Salvation Army and a monetary donation was given to The Herald on behalf of the Salvation Army for Christmas. The Kultivators were delighted that The President of The Garden Clubs of Illinois, Ms. Stephanie Greene, Libertyville, IL, installed the 2010 Officers: President Gayle Fischer, Bourbonnais, Vice President & Programs Diane Siaroff, Bourbonnais, Second VP Darlene Brandt, Kankakee, Secretary Becky Williams, Kankakee, and Treasurer Lois Ware, Momence.

We were inspired by Ms. Becky Williams of Busse & Rieck Flowers & Gifts when she presented a Christmas Design program titled “Holly Jolly Holidays”. Becky’s program featured three design themes.

The first theme featured wreaths, center pieces and arrangements of fresh cut and artificial holly. The audience was amazed by a wreath that was designed to look like one wreath, but was actually cut in half to be used on double doors. An accompanying stunning matching mailbox cover was designed to decorate a standing mailbox. Andy Roland of Kankakee was the lucky auction bidder for this arrangement. Ms. Williams also included square and round clear glass vases that had holiday ornaments inside them that were positioned to act as a grid that would hold the festive flowers in place.

Nature’s Beauty was the next theme. Driftwood from Colorado and sugar pine cones and acorns from California were featured in many of these arrangements. She explained how she liked to collect “free” nature souvenirs when she travels on family vacations and this is her favorite product to work with. The highlight of this segment was a lighted artificial evergreen wreath that she had glued used red shotgun shells over the lights and then decorated with pine cones, ribbons and vines. Marian Nitschke, Jamestown, ND was the prevailing bidder of this wreath. Becky also featured fresh cut boxwood, holly, evergreen and Bells of Ireland topiary trees in clay pots, and small 4” clay saucers filled with pinecones, moss and berries and a small red cardinal. These were perfect to use as a party favor or by a place setting.

Becky’s final segment was titled “Going Green”. These arrangements included natural green flowers such as Bells of Ireland, carnations, roses, Fuji mums, Button mums, and also flowers that were grown in Israel including Silver Tree, Kochia, Amaranthus Leucadendron and Agapanthus. The special arrangement in this segment was buffet piece of live growing green grass with a horizontal trellis above it. The trellis was anchored by two side arrangements of agapanthus, kochia and evergreens while white mums covered spheres which looked like snowballs laying in the grass. Crystal teardrop ornaments were suspended by fishing line off the trellis and above the grass. Barb Mantoan, Bourbonnais made the winning bid for this masterpiece. At least two dozen of Becky’s beautiful creations were auctioned off and the proceeds will be used for area beautification projects.
